Didactics

“Medical education is not completed at the medical school, it is only begun.”
    -William H. Welch (1850-1934)

Didactics are an important part of any post-graduate training program, and didactics are an integral part of the residency program at Southwest.

Dr. Leckie presenting a lecture.

Time is set aside twice weekly for lectures.  Residents are excused from all clinical duties during this time.  Lectures are presented by residents and attendings.  Lectures cover emergency medicine topics from from Tintinalli's.  Additional time is devoted prior to the annual in-service exam for an intensive board review.

Once monthly, residents meet for journal club.  This is a time when residents review several articles pertinent to emergency medicine, not only to keep current on new topics, but also in an effort to understand how to read and review a scientific article.

Dr. Henson works through a case in mock oral boards.

A highlight of our program is our Oral Board Preparation.  At each lecture, two residents participate in a mock oral board patient.  These case are presented by attendings, and are presented in a fashion similar to ACOEP Oral Boards.
